VOLLEYBALL TEAM CONTINUES ROAD SHOW IN PITTSBURGH

RICHMOND, Ky. - Coach Lori Duncan's Eastern Kentucky University women's volleyball team continues its road schedule this weekend by participating in the Robert Morris College Colonial Classic in Moon Township, PA.

EKU takes on Canisius Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Robert Morris at 8:00 p.m. in pool play. The Colonels' action Sunday will depend on how Eastern fares on Saturday and who they will be matched up from the other pool which contains teams from Oakland, Howard and St. Francis (PA).

Eastern, 0-5 on the season, began the year by losing to Kentucky, 12-15, 15-8, 6-15 and 5-15 last Wednesday in Memorial Coliseum on UK's campus.

"We played well, but the adjustments needed were not made," said Duncan, who has begun her second year at the helm of the Eastern program. "We were able to set plays up, but not execute them. This is a young team and still unsure... but in a couple of months, the execution will be there."

EKU then competed in the very tough L & L / Michigan State Classic last weekend in East Lansing, MI. The Colonels came up on the short end of all four matches played, but were going against some of the nation's finest volleyball squads.

Eastern opened the tournament with a loss to Cleveland State (3-15, 8-15, 4-15) and came back later Friday to lose to eventual tournament champion, Clemson (6-15, 2-15, 7-15). Saturday, the Colonels were defeated by Texas A&M (6-15, 0-15, 2-15) and lost to Michigan State (4-15, 1-15, 11-15).

"This was a great thing for us," said Duncan. "We had the opportunity to play against some of the best teams around. Clemson was tougher than expected. They are very well-coached and have a strong team."

Duncan was disappointed that her team did not take more risks when playing these high-caliber teams.

"We were a team that had nothing to lose. We should have taken that and run with it," Duncan noted.

She felt that the scores reflected this until the last game against Michigan State when Eastern was able to score 11 points.

"In that last game, we were able to put 11 points on the board," said Duncan. "We were more aggressive, took risks and tried different things. That was our success!"

Following the trip to Pennsylvania, Eastern plays three more matches on the road next week before hosting Murray State, Sept. 24, in the home opener at McBrayer Arena at 7:00 p.m.
