WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM HEADED FOR SEMO AND EIU
RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky University's women's volleyball team is taking to the road again this weekend for two Ohio Valley Conference games, playing at Southeast Missouri State University Friday and at Eastern Illinois University Saturday.
This past weekend, the Colonels made their first appearance on their home court at Alumni Coliseum, hosting Murray State University. Unable to grasp a victory, Murray State defeated Eastern, 3-0 (7-15,13-15,12-15) last Friday night.
EKU head coach Lori Duncan felt that game delays had an effect on play.
"The girls had been waiting for five hours due to the game time being pushed back two hours because of Murray State having bus problems on the way here. However, once we started playing, we didn't quit. We played hard and strong," Duncan said.
Less than 24 hours later, the Colonels met Tennessee-Martin, defeating the Skyhawks in three games (15-9,15-11,18-16). Duncan was pleased that the team was able to make such a great turnaround.
"Kristen (Campbell) and Courtney (Huyser) played great, which opened up the ability of the outside hitters. Bowen and Galati were able to do things they couldn't do before," said Duncan.
Duncan also said that junior co-captain Mary Lee Keranko had a great impact on the UT Martin match.
"Mary Lee established the hitters she needed and made solid, quick decisions on the court," Duncan said.
Tuesday, EKU traveled to Ohio to play the University of Cincinnati. After the previous win, the Colonels were unable to duplicate that feat, losing 3-15, 6-15, 7-15.
"This team is not emotionally confident yet. We need to establish that emotional maturity that drives us to play hard against everybody, every night. The scoreboard should not matter to them. We just want the team to play hard and to play well. After that, everything else should fall into place," Duncan concluded.
The Colonels are currently 4-10 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
