LORI DUNCAN NAMED EKU VOLLEYBALL COACH

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Lori Duncan, former women's head volleyball coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and former men's and women's head volleyball coach at The Pennsylvania State University at McKeesport, has been named women's head volleyball coach at Eastern Kentucky University.

Duncan, who played for former EKU coach Geri Polvino from 1980-83, received her bachelor of science degree in recreation and park administration with a minor in physical education in 1984. She later completed two masters degrees at EKU -- in physical education in 1986 and in student personnel services in 1987.

"We're very pleased that one of our alumni has come back home to be a part of our program here at Eastern, " said EKU Director of Athletics Dr. Robert Baugh. "She has made a name for herself in volleyball circles since she left us in 1987 and we're excited about getting her back involved with EKU."

Duncan's first head coaching appointment came at The Pennsylvania State University at McKeesport where she served as men's and women's head volleyball coach, student activities director for PSUM and as an instructor in physical education and recreation from 1988-92. While there she compiled a 78-14 record with the women's team. Her best season there was the 199l-92 year that saw her team win the Penn State Commonwealth Athletic Conference championship. PSUM also won the Western Division championship of the CCAC in 199l and 1992.

Duncan then served as women's head volleyball coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she was able to put together a 29-100 mark from 1993-97. She has a overall collegiate coaching record of 107-114.

"I'm really looking forward to coaching at Eastern, " said Duncan. "It will be a huge challenge, but at the same time exciting and a lot of fun. I want the program to succeed and I know what it takes for that to happen since I played here. Geri Polvino (former EKU coach for 31 years) started the EKU volleyball tradition and now it's up to us to regain that level of excellence we once attained."

She has also had several years experience working with Junior Olympic Volleyball teams and with summer volleyball camps. She was Junior Olympic Volleyball Coach for the 16 Elite Golden Triangles of Pittsburgh, PA, who had a 59-23 mark and finished ranked 47th in the nation in 1994-95 at the U.S. Junior Nationals..

She also served as Junior Olympic Volleyball Program Executive and Director of Coaching for the 18 Elite Team (ranked 25th in the nation, a first for any East Coast Club), the Nike Steel City Juniors of Pittsburgh in 1995-96 who went 78-16 that season. Then in 1997, the Nike Elite team was ranked 35th in the nation and compiled a 64-18 record.

She has led her Junior Olympic Volleyball teams to the East Coast championship for the past three years and has coached 10 athletes among these different teams who have furthered their education at such Division I schools as Penn State, Ohio State, Arkansas, Massachusetts, North Carolina State, Kent, Rider and Loyola (MD).

Duncan's overall Junior Olympic coaching record is a sparkling 226-66 (.773).

Duncan has served for the past five years as the Men's Collegiate Volleyball Club Coach/Adviser, having attained a best-national ranking of second in the country, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

She is also the founder and has been the Executive Director for the past six years of the "Lo Knows Volleyball" Summer Camps in Pittsburgh.

While at Eastern, she was a four-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection (1980-83), All-OVC Tournament choice in 1983 and was an AIAW All-Region choice in 1980, while playing outside hitter for the Colonels. She was also chosen as EKU Female Athlete of the Year in 1984 and won the team awards her senior season for Best All-Around Player and Best Defensive Player.

Duncan, 35, is a native of North Huntingdon, PA.
