9.3.00

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team opened the 2000 season this weekend at the Mortar Board Purdue Premier in West Lafayette, Ind., with a rocky start. The Colonels' record now stands at 0-3.

Courtney Huyser was named to the All-Tournament team after an impressive showing. The junior middle blocker recorded 31 kills, eight total blocks and a .328 hitting percentage during tournament play.

EKU opened play on Friday against tournament-host Purdue with a 3-0 loss, 15-3, 15-3, 9-3. Junior transfer Julie Brandmeyer led the way for the Colonels with nine kills and a team-high six digs. Huyser also had a strong performance with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage.

Purdue was led by Julie Doud's 16 kills and a stellar .538 hitting percentage. The Boilermakers also notched a .500 team hitting percentage that proved to be too much for the Colonels to overcome. EKU fell to 0-1 with the loss.

The Colonels faced Kansas in the nightcap and fell by a final score of 3-0, 15-3, 15-3, 15-7. Huyser and Brandmeyer led EKU with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Nancy Bell and Amy Myatt led the Jayhawks as they each recorded 10 kills. The loss moved EKU's record to 0-2 on the year.

On Saturday, the Colonels fell to Western Michigan in their final game of the weekend by a score of 3-1. Eastern was led by senior Courtney Bowen's 17 kills and four aces. Huyser had another impressive match, recording 16 kills and a team-high .407 hitting percentage.

The Broncos were led by Monyka Paul's 17 kills and .519 hitting percentage.

EKU will travel to Alaska-Fairbanks next Friday, September 8, to take on Gonzaga at the Nanook Classic.
